Just a very quick post as we are mid carnival and are just about to set off to get ready for the parade. Last night we were honoured with the presence of the fantastic ZZ Birmingham for our opening night of Carnival celebrations. The evening started off in perfect sunshine and ended up with great […]

There are a few places around here that make a delicious homity pie, Denby pottery café sells one, as does our favourite Bloomers Bakewell pudding shop in Bakewell. We have been known to detour to there just so we can eat warm homity pie whilst sitting by the river Wye watching the trout darting about. This […]

Ambergate Carnival Fun Family Sports Day and Pet Show was a good afternoon. The sun stayed with us throughout, and I hope that everyone had a nice, if slightly chaotic, afternoon.

Finally! Things are starting to flourish in the garden. It seems to have been a slow start this year, in fact the french beans and the courgettes just seem to be lounging around enjoying the sunshine instead of getting on with growing. Perhaps I am not watering them enough, but I don’t like getting the hose out […]

Our local bakery “The Loaf” at Crich has a website, a blog and also uses Twitter. They make the most fantastic bread and cakes so I call in whenever I can. I am always interested to know what their specials are so I suggested that they Twitter them on a regular basis. This seems to be […]

We didn't plant any of the currants in the garden, they came with the territory and this is the only one we saved. Then as I wandered around I noticed a couple of other plants, that despite being here over 5 years, have never been seen before.

This is a slightly unusual one for me; just completed this replacement base for an athletics trophy for my friend Robert. Its made of American Black Walnut, which will age to a nice deep chocolate brown over the years through exposure to the sun. Not the sort of job that comes up very regularly, but […]

Well quite often tables in my case – it seems to be something I make a lot of. These Oak tables were made in a group of 6 to take some advantage of batch production. Interestingly the tops and stretcher rails are made from recycled library shelves given to me by a friend, who received […]

I made some Elderflower Cordial yesterday from the recipe in Celia's blog and today it looks a bit less pretty but already tastes and smells lovely.

We have just bottled up 10 litres of 'Elderflower Champagne' and are waiting nervously for it to mature, or explode, whichever comes first. It certainly smells the part and was not really any trouble to make.

Although Ambergate Carnival is not exactly a ‘Thing I Make’ I certainly played a part in raising the funds and organising it last year. This year I am Chairman, so feel even more responsible for making it be a good day! Last year we ran Parade Workshops and Dance Sessions, the School Painted a Mural, we had the Digger Dancers performing. […]

I thought we had better include the other members of the team, so here is a picture of something George made. George is aged 7. He loves his lego and has recently happily graduated from Duplo. Vehicles and fighting machines seem to be his favourite subjects but he is not aversed to a building or […]

Heres a set of wood samples I just prepared, so I have a talking point about timber selection, should I convince someone to commission some furniture from me. For those who care (and I fully accept that may only be me) the woods are (starting at 12 O’Clock) Maple, Birch ply, Douglas Fir, Tulipwood, Lime, […]

These 2 chaps were carved to amuse myself on 2 different trips away. The Welshman on the left was carved in Trawsfyndd last Easter and the Yorkshireman on the right was carved on the beach at Filey last summer. Nowadays they stand as sentinels in alcoves on either side of the fireplace, where they’ve […]

The spell of warm weather seems to have brought the flowers on in leaps and bounds in the garden at the moment. Here’s a few recent pictures of some of my favourites. Anyway, enough of that, I’d better post something more manly next time. Ed

If you would like a really easy bread recipe that needs no kneading check out my version of the NYT recipe that is featured in this months Fabulous Places Blog. I find this works best for me if I make the dough just before the school run (around 3.30pm) then do the first dough slooshing when I […]

This console table in Canadian Maple was designed to sit on the landing at the top of a staircase, hence its very shallow depth. The subtle curves of the leg and the centre rail give a simple elegance, while the through wedged tenons provide some detail to punctuate the form. […]

Ernie is our Border Terrier who was one in September. He has changed our lives in many ways, ‘mostly’ for the better. He gets around 2 hours of walks a day which is good for him but also good for us as it gets us out into our beautiful local surroundings and we get to see things […]
