Winter Gardens

March 9, 2010

4

On Sunday we finally got into the garden for the 1st time this year. It was sunny, but VERY cold and frosty. So frosty in fact that I couldn’t get through the soil to belatedly plant the shallots, garlic and spring onions. I am off to try and do that shortly. George and I emptied […]

Things to do when snowed in

January 6, 2010

4

We have kind of been snowed up a bit recently, and as George is always getting the stay-at-home-snack-attacks I thought I would make some Rocky Road. Version 1.0 was a bit of a shopping disaster, as due to the weather I ended up getting most of the provisions from our local petrol station, who needless […]

Two Experiments and a Competition

October 7, 2009

9

I made a fairly ordinary meal last night of sausage and mash, but had a hankering to experiment a bit on the side. I had seen a photograph on Foodgawker of Hasselback potatoes on a blog called Seasaltwithfood and wanted to try them. So in addition to a mountain of fluffy mashed potato (I always […]

Mr Ed on the decks (now with added sunshine)

October 3, 2009

3

Well just the one deck actually, but I liked the sound of it. So the first of the two decks that have been promised for many years is now complete. My timing is a bit off because the ‘summer’ has just finished so they will have to wait until the spring to be enjoyed, but […]

Raised Bed Building

September 13, 2009

4

It’s only been 5 years, but finally we got around to putting together some raised beds for vegetables today. Well I say ‘we’, but Ed put them together this afternoon with a little help from George. Actually I was in the kitchen most of the time preparing a tea of creamy chicken and pancetta pie […]

Bank Holiday Clearance

September 1, 2009

5

A lot of this Weekend has been spent having a big clear up in the garden. After Ed’s excavations we had a couple of tons of rocks, stone and dirt to get rid of. It was stopping me getting to the compost heap so composting had slowed down recently. Not so much a hot compost heap, but […]

Absence makes the garden grow faster

August 21, 2009

1

We got back from 5 days away on Monday and had a great time camping in Snowdonia. I always love getting home though, not only do I miss home itself, but it’s always good to see what the garden has been up to. When we got back from our holiday last year we were surprised to find that […]

Courgette Flowers

August 12, 2009

4

I’ve got so much to do today as we are off camping in North Wales, so I shouldn’t really be posting about stuffing courgettes. That said our very cute Border Terrier Ernie is snuggled on my lap and tea is mashing in the pot so I have a few moments to spare before the chores begin. Our friends […]

Alliums for the chop

August 10, 2009

3

Finally we have had a Weekend with 2 days of sunshine. It’s been the first chance to get the onions, garlic and shallots out of the ground and allow them to dry in the sun rather than dragging muddy bulbs into the kitchen. I was also spurred into action on reading the MTP Blog. I […]

While we are gone

July 24, 2009

2

Finally sewed up the tent and the car is all packed. We are going to be technology free now for a couple of days camping in the Peak District. I couldn’t bear to leave a picture of funny looking potatoes on the blog while we are away so here is a pretty flower instead, photographed […]

Blighty Potatoes

July 23, 2009

1

Our whole, quite large, potato crop seems to have been struck down with the blight.  I am not quite sure why but talking about it makes me want to talk like a pirate, which is a bit odd. A week or two ago we noticed that the leaves were starting to look a bit ropey, […]

Start of the Summer Harvest

June 30, 2009

5

Finally! Things are starting to flourish in the garden. It seems to have been a slow start this year, in fact the french beans and the courgettes just seem to be lounging around enjoying the sunshine instead of getting on with growing. Perhaps I am not watering them enough, but I don’t like getting the hose out […]

Things we didn’t make…at all

June 24, 2009

0

We didn't plant any of the currants in the garden, they came with the territory and this is the only one we saved. Then as I wandered around I noticed a couple of other plants, that despite being here over 5 years, have never been seen before.

10 Green Bottles

June 13, 2009

0

We have just bottled up 10 litres of 'Elderflower Champagne' and are waiting nervously for it to mature, or explode, whichever comes first. It certainly smells the part and was not really any trouble to make.

In an English Country Garden

June 4, 2009

The spell of warm weather seems to have brought the flowers on in leaps and bounds in the garden at the moment. Here’s a few recent pictures of some of my favourites.   Anyway, enough of that, I’d better post something more manly next time. Ed

The First Al Fresco

Our first barbecue of the year. Long may it continue.

Spring Seedlings

May 29, 2009

0

These are the Pak Choi Seedlings back in April 09. Now they are big enough for us to use them in salads. We may let some graduate to be proper plants soon. In contrast these are the last of our winter vegetables that I have just harvested. Savoy Cabbage, Curly Kale, Broccoli and Purple Sprouting […]
