The sun shone yesterday for the annual Spring Fair at George’s School.
The children threw sponges, bobbed for apples, bought magic wands and ate cake pops.
But we all know what the main event is at a school fair.
The cake stall.
The cake stall is always a crowd puller and makes a significant contribution to the school funds. The current fund-raising efforts are being put towards a yurt, so maybe this time next year we will be serving our cakes from a Mongolian tent.
My donations to the cause were Rhubarb and Custard Muffins, Marmalade Tea Loaves, Mini Victoria Sponges and Chocolate Cupcakes.
It’s always interesting to see the time and effort people put in to their cake baking; it’s just as interesting seeing what the punters chose to buy first.
My observations this year tell me that people aren’t that fussed about a rhubarb muffin, but put a strawberry or a blueberry on top of anything and it will sell like a proverbial hot cake.
All in all cakes were more popular than ever and we sold out of all but a few straggly fairy cakes.
Note to self: Next year make simple cakes and go heavy on the fruit.
There are more details about the day on the school blog.

Stunning pictures today (as ever!), they’ve got a fabulous retro look about them. The cake stall looks very stylishly presented, local events in our neck of the woods tend to be very haphazard and amateur. These look like they’d be in an upmarket bakery. Fantastic shot of the lady with all the teacups – really tells a story!

Glad you like the pics and cakes. The ‘tea lady’ pic was Ed’s favourite too.

I wish I could take more ‘people shots’ but you have to be careful as some parents don’t like you to take photos of their kids.

Everything looks just wonderful. Is it sad those brick houses remind me of a specific Dr. Who episode? (The Olympics no-face one if you must know and are a fan.)

Do you mean the red brick, Greg? That’s the school 🙂 And no, it’s not ‘that’ sad, I only said at lunch today that I am about ready for some more Dr Who.

Yes, the red brick! They intend to go to London 2012 and wind up in the 1950s or something. I hear we have to wait until August! (But I haven’t checked that.)

Hello! I love the things you make. So talented and creative. Will you be posting the recipe of the orange chocolate cake? I would love to try it!

Hi there Dimples! Thank you for your comment, I’m afraid that beautiful cake was not one of mine, one of the Dads at school made it but I do make a chocolate orange cake, a Nigella one. You can see it here: https://thingswemake.wordpress.com/2011/01/08/chocolate-orange-cake/

I love the red brick too – reminds me of my primary school. In fact this whole account makes me think of our annual village fete on the green with welly wanging and throw the sponge.
I also bake for our school parent’s evenings and it’s great to be able to contribute even in a small way. Gingerbread always goes down well and I like to make star shapes (corny – but they’re all stars!). The Victoria sandwich cakes are beautiful. The slightly retro feel to the images is fantastic – do you use something in post production to achieve that (or just your photography skills). The one of the boys is wonderful. I too try not to take too many people picks for the blog but then again I think it’s a way of life now. PS Teens and KP are Dr Who addicts.

Hi Sally, it’s the same school that I went to many…many years ago so I get double nostalgia! I use Lightroom to store and Post Process my photos. The presets it comes with, and others you can download for free, are brilliant for giving a retro feel. I do nip into Photoshop for some things but Lightroom is so much easier and quicker. It’s on offer at the moment so worth a purchase if you fancy a go. I have created some of my own presets to boost pictures too. I love that photo of the little boys, I must catch up with their Mum today and check she is okay I published it, but they look so happy and cute! The apple bobbing stall is George and his current ‘girl’ 🙂

I love rhubarb too but I hated the stringy green stuff that mum grew when we were kids.
That was George’s girlfriend, but she dumped him 2 days later. Girls are mean.

Am always for cake too! Love all of yours but my favourite pick would be the rhubarb muffins!!! Am totally deprived of rhubarb living over here in the far east…..there are one or two (!!) that appears occasionally but ridiculously expensive! I will just have to enjoy looking at yours that looks oh so scrumptious! 🙂 Oh and yes, girls are mean 😉 😉
