Tool Box on thingswemake

The good thing about woodworking as a hobby is that it’s totally self-rewarding; you make the things you want, for you, exactly how you want them to be. As I’ve said before, I like to have the things I’ve made recently around me for a while so I can soak up the visual details of the thing I’ve created…

…sorry, what? I’m giving this toolbox away as a Secret Santa gift? Well that really doesn’t sound like the sort of thing I’d agree to, but OK let’s go with it.

The good thing about woodworking as a hobby for me as an introvert is the beautifully solitary nature of it. It’s about working quietly in your own company, taking enjoyment from the process of designing and making, relying only on what I do, or don’t do…

…what now? I’ve arranged a meeting of woodworkers from all around the county to get together in a great big group and actually talk to each other ? Now you have got to be kidding me, I hardly think an introvert would do that – do you? Oh I did? I see.

Anyway, never mind that – let’s move on.

The good thing about woodworking as a hobby is that I do my woodwork for my eyes only, with no-one judging how I do it. The American woodworker Tony Konovaloff said ‘the things I make are for my customers, the way I make them is for me’ – I like that concept. That’s how I like to see my woodwork methods, as my own private process…

..seriously, you have got to stop interrupting…what? I agreed to demonstrate cutting dovetails to a group of mainly professional woodworkers at close quarters? WHY THE ACTUAL F WOULD I DO THAT? I said it seemed like a good idea you say? Well I’m beginning to think someone’s made a terrible mistake here…

…yes, thank you, pressing my forehead against the two walls where they meet in the corner of the room does help. Yes and the humming…and the rocking back and forth.

I expect it’ll be fine, I mean whats the worst that could happen?
