A manifesto for a ‘Making Renaissance’ by Ed Sutton
At Things{we}make we regularly talk about what we make, sometimes if the mood takes us we talk about how we make, but what rarely gets covered is why we make. I suspect the main reason for this is that to truly explore the underlying motivations for making leads us into a deeper discussion than our mainly illustrative blog supports, hence this more detailed discussion of the subject.

That’s a great article. You’re on the money, literally. We did our own bathroom renovation too, no easy feat, but it saved lots of money. With food, homemade is just better so often. Of course, there are far better cooks, but I can’t afford to pay them nightly.

Interesting.
It’s only in recent generations that the work we do “for a living” has become so separated from “living” and the things we consume or acquire. Times they are a-changing (again) and I’m all for it.

So many powerful arguments right there – well said. I wish I was a bit more ‘handy’ all round – but I try to do ‘my bit’ in the kitchen and the garden for exactly the reasons you mention. Nothing like cooking and eating homegrown producef or a perfect illustration of the principles you’ve set out.
