Handtool Secret Santa

Posted on December 25, 2009

Even woodworkers need Christmas presents…

For the last couple of years I have organised a secret santa for handtool enthusiasts on the woodworking internet forum I belong to. Its a bit of fun and also means that amongst the socks and bath salts, this little group of woodworkers gets a tool related gift from one of their internet buddies.

Last year I made these Rosewood and Brass marking gauges, 2 of which went to Kent as a Secret Santa gift;

This year I have tried something new and made a plane, complete with adjustment hammer;

The plane is made of Goncalo Alves which is a dense fine grained timber ideal for this application. I made all the metal components in Brass (with the exception of the blade) using my ancient metalworking lathe and milling fixture. The handle of the hammer is Cocobolo, with an Ebony wedge.

The best bit for me is to see the pictures of all the things people have made and laboured over, as well as enjoying the reactions of the people receiving the gifts. Don’t it make you feel all warm inside….I must be going soft!

Merry Christmas, Ed
